Third Quarter 2010 Newsletter

A few months ago, we received an enhancement request to add three fields to the equipment master file in RentalMan. The request was to add three alphanumeric fields with a length of eight characters each. While reviewing the request, we started asking ourselves the following questions:

  1. If we add three fields, why not a hundred? Why not a thousand?

  2. What if the requirements change, as they sometimes do, and the fields need to be ten characters each instead of eight? For that matter, what if they need to be a numeric field or a date field?

Looking back at the shows we have exhibited at in 2010, the strongest feeling I walked away with was that a positive shift is definitely happening in our industry. Like any other company, we really had to analyze where our money would be allocated throughout the year. The issue of exhibiting or not exhibiting at trade shows was a big focus, since so many resources are required to pull off a successful show. With shows being exceptionally slow in 2008 and 2009, the option of not exhibiting became even more attractive.

Since our last newsletter, we’ve received several questions regarding the release of RentalMan Version 11.  We compiled these inquiries to create a Frequently Asked Questions document to help you better understand Version 11’s features, the overall upgrade process and how this will affect you.

Due to the great response we received from our June credit card processing WebEx, we thought it might be a good idea to circle back to see if there were any additional questions or comments on the topic. For those of you that missed the training session, you can view a recording of it as well as the associated documentation on our User Assistance Site. Areas that we found customers to be the most excited about were:

  • No additional monthly or licensing fees
  • One point of support for both RentalMan and Credit Card Issues
  • Hosted service – fewer possible adjustments
  • All credit traffic will require a RentalMan document. No unauthorized terminal usage.

August signaled third quarter IBM announcements and new models, completing this year’s rollout of POWER7.

New models introduced: the flagship Power 795 and four Express models: 710, 720, 730 and 740.

A record 285 customers moved criticial business workloads to IBM systems and storage in the second quarter of 2010 to take advantage of continuing IBM enhancements announced with Power Flex: supporting active-active availability between two systems, allocation and re-balancing of processor and memory, plus live partition mobility for optimal flexible workload movement.

Did you know you can adjust the number of copies printed for RentalMan transactions?

With RentalMan’s Outq Override File Maintenance, the number of duplicate copies that print for the transactions listed here can be controlled.  This functionality is self-maintained by our On-Premise clients.  Our Software as a Service (SaaS) clients are encouraged to have these maintained with the help of our support staff.
